How A Sports Video Startup Turned Raw 4K Footage Into A Working Business

See how we did
Industry:
Entertainment

To capitalize on the growing demand for premium sports content in the US, Starlight launched a brand-new business:

recording sports events and selling the footage directly to teams, athletes, and scouts. xfive built the technical infrastructure from scratch to handle, process, and monetize heavy 4K video data.

Project Scope

We worked with Starlight on everything from platform architecture and custom video player development to high-throughput cloud upload pipelines and multi-tiered licensing.

What?

UX/UI Design

How?

We designed the full platform experience, from the viewer-facing video player and editor dashboard to licensing and account flows.

What?

Ruby on Rails Monolith

How?

The entire platform runs on a single Rails codebase handling video management, user accounts, licensing, and clip generation.

What?

Custom Video Player

How?

A custom player with an interactive timeline, action filtering, and clip creation, plus a separate editor version for labeling contractors.

What?

AWS Processing Pipeline

How?

4K uploads are automatically transcoded, thumbnailed, and stored via AWS, with clip rendering triggered on demand.

What?

Multi-Tiered Licensing

How?

The platform supports team licenses for teams and a college coach tier with platform-wide video access.

The Numbers Behind the Transformation

Our comprehensive digital overhaul triggered an immediate surge across all critical performance metrics.

“xfive takes the time to truly understand your business. They helped us implement a complex system where sports highlights can be found easily - a simple user idea with a very complicated technical execution. Their professionalism was beyond anyone else; they were completely transparent and felt like part of our own team. Our customers love the final product.”

Features

Action Filters

Using a side-toggle interface, viewers filter the video by specific match actions or search by player jersey number to jump directly to those moments on the interactive timeline.

Multi-Tiered Licensing

The platform supports team licenses for organizations and a college coach tier with access to all videos across the platform.

Dual-Interface UI & Custom Editor Dashboard

The platform has two versions of the video player: one for viewers, one for editing contractors. The editor dashboard lets contractors tag actions on the timeline and assign jersey numbers to highlights, turning raw footage into searchable clips without manual overhead.

Resumable Parallel 4K Upload Component

We built a custom upload engine that splits files and uploads them via multiple parallel connections to maximize throughput. If a connection drops, the upload resumes from where it stopped.

Automated 4K Video Processing Pipeline

Every upload is automatically transcoded to 1080p for playback and thumbnailed for browsing. When a user creates a clip, the pipeline renders a full 4K version of that segment for download.
